Bar B – My Little Slice of Europe

It was a chilly Friday evening, and sushi was our dinner calling – but, before that, we decided to stop for a quick drink at Bar B, and I’m so very glad we did.

Stepping inside, the charming & cosy space immediately reminded me of the cute little pinxtos bars we’d frequented (& loved) in San Sebastian last year.  This tiny Chelsea hole in the wall is kitted out with a small, narrow bar with standing room only, and an exposed kitchen serving up an array of spanish/italian fusion sandwiches & tapas.

P.S. Look up – the ceiling’s made of wine corks – pretty cool.

Drinks are reasonably priced and I really enjoyed the White Sangria in particular …

Bar B’s kitchen is open 7 days a week until midnight & I like the fact that you can watch your dish being prepared in front of you – it adds a certain intimacy to the venue.  Although we didn’t try many food items that evening, we watched as each appetising plate was carefully put together, and the dishes we did have were both pretty good.

I’ve heard that it’s also popular as a lunch spot for their sandwiches – here’s the take out lunch menu:  http://www.barbnyc.com/menu/barB_TakeOut.pdf

What else I like about Bar B, is its versatility depending on what you’re in the mood for – stop by for a quick drink & bite, or stay longer and spend an evening ordering food & drink at a leisurely pace as you go.

Bear in mind that the space can only really accommodate 12-15 people, & that evening, we were fortunate to grab the last 2 remaining spaces at the counter when we arrived at 7.30pm.  From what i saw later on, i’d imagine it to be rather uncomfortable when it’s busy, since there’s not much residual space to stand apart from at the bar counter.  So either arrive early, or be ready to wait for a spot to open up (& given that some people may just stop in for a quick drink, the wait may not be too long).

For me, Bar B is unpretentious, laid back and a rareity in the usual NYC bar scene.  The welcoming staff & appetising snack menu means I’ll be returning to try more dishes soon.

Dips Bites: Bar B is the perfect spot to perch along the reclaimed wooden counter, sip on a drink(s), order some small plates & chat with your friends.  A great place to unwind after a day at work.
