Peg + Patriot – Wierd & Wonderful Distillates

The Peg + Patriot bar opened about a month ago in Bethnal Green and is the brainchild of Matt Whiley, aka The Talented Mr Fox (in Leicester Square) – some would also refer to him as a ‘spirit genius’ and ‘master cocktail maker’.  [In case you’re wondering about the name, ‘Peg’ is an old English word for a shot of liquor and the bar is located in Town Hall Hotel in ‘Patriot’ Square]

As soon as i walked in, I loved it straight away. Both the design and vibe are really cool.

Appearance-wise it’s simple & unfussy, yet very tasteful & stylish – there’s a striking central bar, with low hanging warehouse bulbs and classy comfy leather seating around the sides of the room.

The vibe is laid back and they’ve got a really good music mix playing in the background – something which you don’t normally get from a hotel bar, and for me and my friends, it really added something to our experience.

There’s a cocktail menu full of quirky, eclectic concoctions – sip on Salt Beef Beigal Cognac, Roasted Rice Ice-Cream Liqueur, Pineapple Dry Vermouth and other unusual combinations. However, as our very lovely waitress explained to us, this bar is more than just creative cocktails – they do their own distillation of spirits on site … cue the random contraption you’ll see at the side of the bar as per below!.  Matt Whiley produces 3 styles of gin as well as his own house vodkas, liqueurs and vermouths and from what we tasted, we were very impressed.

Our tipples…

If you go, don’t miss out on the excellent Iberico Pork + Fois Gras Sliders courtesy of Lee Wescott from the Typing Room restaurant across the hall – they were 100% melt-in-the-mouth scrumptious.

Dips Sips: Peg + Patriot has shaken up the London bar scene very nicely in my book and is a brilliant new drinking establishment in East London. The bar delivers skilled barmen, creative mixology, excellent service and plenty of stylishness in a pomp-free environment. I’d say it’s certainly worth a trip & I could have easily hung out there for a few more hours had my Typing Room dinner reservation not beckoned.
