The Winter Cabin – Cute, Cosy & Fun

When i first read about The Winter Cabin at Gordon Ramsay’s York & Albany, the sheer cosiness of the concept immediately struck me and i swiftly secured a booking to go check it out.  York & Albany is a townhouse, restaurant & bar lodged nicely between Regent’s Park & Camden, serving a modern British menu.

York & Albany restaurant

Nicely tucked away in a courtyard behind the main restaurant, my eyes lit up at the sight of the wooden chalet – it’s a charming picture of winter-chic.  Essentially, the cabin is home to a pop-up bar, serving a cocktail & snack menu.  You can either book for 2 cocktails & paired snacks (£30 per person) or 3 cocktails & paired snacks (£40 per person).

Upon entering, it oozed rustic charm – adorned with tartan blankets, faux fur & plenty of comfy cushions along with soft lighting, mostly by candlelight. It wasn’t hard to imagine we’d been transported to a log cabin far, far away in the wilderness.  A little bar fits snugly in one corner, while the rest of the space is taken up with seating.  I’d say there’s enough space to sit 6 comfortably, although officially it’s meant to fit 8 (this would be a tight squeeze in my opinion).

But tonight, the two of us had the place all to ourselves :)   I hadn’t actually realised when i booked that the cabin is solely for exclusive hire & that no other groups can book the same time slot as you (time slots are 2 hours long).  I just loved this private, intimate quality of the cabin.

We were invited to hook up our iPod, and then sit back and make ourselves snug.  Our personal barman, the lovely Matt, was on hand to whip us up festive cocktails & dish up hearty seasonal snacks fresh from the kitchen.

We started with a couple of cocktails…

The Hunter – Apricot, lemon juice, Bombay Sapphire gin & Ayala Champagne The
Winter is Coming – Ketel one vodka, gingerbread liqueur, apple juice, lemon, orange marmalade & Angostura bitters

And then came the savoury treats…

Duck liver parfait, whisky jelly, country toast
Venison & juniper burgers, beetroot relish
Game scotch eggs, English mustard

My personal favourite was the duck liver parfait with whisky jelly served on country toast, which literally melted in the mouth. P.S. Vegetarian alternatives are available.

And rounded off the night with a sweet ending…

The egg-nog truffles deserve a special mention.  I’m not usually a fan of chocolate truffles with cream based fillings, but these little beauties were incredible, with their fabulously crisp casing and velvety interior.  To my delight, Matt took us on a tour of the kitchen later on and the chef gave us a doggy bag of the truffles :)

And just when we thought it was all over, Matt concocted some complimentary cocktails which rounded off our night perfectly….

Dips Bites: This cosy-chic addition to York & Albany’s back garden is a delightful little haven in which to spend a chilly winter’s afternoon or evening & enjoy a bit of festive indulgence.  Far from your average setting in London, it would make a nice spot for a date (given the ready made romantic atmosphere) but equally for a merry little catch up with friends or family.  I’d recommend checking out this snug little sanctuary to escape from the city & unwind for a few hours.

The Winter Cabin is popping up until 28th February 2015 and you must pre-book a time slot (afternoon or evening sessions available).  Call 020 7592 1226 or email
